Week Signal — Episode 13 — The Fenced Frontier

Show Notes

Meta Fences the Frontier, NVIDIA Buys the Estate

Meta Superintelligence Labs released Muse Wonder and Wonder Full (codename Watermelon) — Wonder Full lands #2 on Artificial Analysis' index, passing Opus 5.5 on legal, long coding and memory. Both models closed: the Llama company has fenced its frontier, gating Wonder Full behind $50/$200 monthly Muse Code plans while undercutting incumbents on price. Meanwhile NVIDIA — already $800M into Reflection AI — is reportedly exploring a full acqui-hire that would top the $20B Groq purchase, after buying Hugging Face, Poolside and Essential AI. The open frontier isn't dissolving; it's being bought by the company that sells the joules. Watch: the next Llama licence.

The Sharp Funnel

Karpathy named the structure: ~5,000 people with true frontier access at the narrow end, ~6B who've hardly used AI at the wide end, 0.2% of the population truly grasping frontier capability — and the gap widening (4.8M views). Same shape in money, per Ramp via AIDB: 80% of OpenAI/Anthropic enterprise revenue from 1% of customers; top-1% payers average $903/month against a $25 median; $825B combined 2026 CapEx guidance approaching $1T in 2027, with Bain projecting an $800B shortfall against the ~$6T AI needs by 2031. Two days, two lenses, one pyramid. Watch: the first policy proposal citing the funnel's shape.

The Boardroom Bug

Federal prosecutors charged an OpenAI engineer with planting a recording device in the executive meeting room; a chatbot account linked to the spouse allegedly asked how to listen in remotely, and OpenAI's own models helped crack the case. The accused worked on the Agents SDK — the tooling layer for autonomous agents. The week stacked four containment vectors: data-centre strikes (Ukraine/Yandex, after Iran's Gulf hits), Nadella's assume-breach doctrine (10M views), the espionage case itself, and Hinton/Bengio's letter proposing frontier models be isolated from external networks — air-gapping as policy language. Meanwhile, diplomats met in the Reykjavik room where Reagan and Gorbachev sat in 1986. Frontier labs are becoming strategic installations — and those get fences, clearances and guards.

What the Fence Can't Hold

The efficiency era rotated in on the accessible side of the fence: Opus 5.5 at a verified 285 tokens/second; Amazon back at the Decart table at a $7B valuation — a 75% premium one month after walking away; Microsoft's Maia 300 claiming 40% more AI output per unit of electricity ("more per joule" — the binding constraint is now power); and Modal crossing $1B ARR with sandboxes alone a $300M run-rate product (~3B spun up, million-concurrent scale) while Perplexity SPACE disclosed a <0.0002% error rate. Advantage is being redefined away from intelligence peaks toward throughput, isolation and trust — and the sandbox layer is becoming the agentic era's trust boundary. Watch: self-hosted sandboxes (Factory's VPC play) as the 2027 sovereignty story.

Trend This Week

The frontier bifurcation spotted in Episode 12 became policy this week: Meta closed its frontier outright, ghost-routing put unannounced models into production traffic, and release timing coupled to the IPO calendar — while the open-weights convergence that defined Episode 12 got its answer: the demand moved, and the supply side fenced itself instead. Around the fence, the interface war completed its map (Apple's HomeView was the last beachhead), the governance thread escalated into containment language (assume-breach doctrine, air-gapping proposals, the Reykjavik summit), and the economics on the accessible side kept rotating toward efficiency metrics — tokens per second, per joule, per sandbox. The frontier recedes; the floor rises. Both were true this week.
