Week Signal — Episode 9 — The Labs Asked to Be Regulated

Show Notes

AEF-1: The Eval Standard Nobody Elected

Three frontier labs (xAI, OpenAI, Anthropic) cosigned a voluntary evaluation standard for third-party AI model assessors. The labs being evaluated are the ones writing the framework — the line between oversight and moat-building is paper-thin.

Amodei's Slowdown Proposal: The Labs Ask for Rules

Dario Amodei's "We Must Pace the Frontier" essay — the most specific slowdown call from a frontier lab CEO yet — drew public support from Altman, Musk, Hassabis, and Nadella. Buried in paragraph 7: the labs are asking governments to enforce what they're proposing.

Judgment Models: A New Model Class That Doesn't Generate

TypeSafe emerged from stealth with Jev — a "System 1" model that only routes and scores, no text generation. 20–200x faster, 40–400x cheaper than LLMs. The pattern "LLM proposes, judgment model decides, code executes" reframes what agentic means.

Brain Rot From the Inside

Azeem Azhar sent his own team an email titled "I do not want your brains to rot" — warning about cognitive offloading and intellectual atrophy from AI tools. The deskilling pattern has gone reflexive: the people building and analysing AI are experiencing the cognitive costs first-hand.

Trend This Week

The governance conversation crystallised this week. AEF-1 on Monday, Amodei's slowdown proposal on Wednesday — the labs moved from "should we regulate" to "the labs are asking to be regulated" in a single week. Simultaneously, the human capability erosion pattern went reflexive: OpenAI's own engineering process is agent-dominated, Azhar warned his own team about brain rot, and a "learning slump" was buried in Anthropic's $517B spending headline. The AI system is becoming more self-contained — it builds itself, regulates itself, evaluates itself — and each week another layer of human oversight gets absorbed into the loop.
